New gold coins to celebrate UK's capital citiesThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 9th March 2010 (1532 views) The Royal Mint has announced plans to launch limited edition £1 gold coins to honour the UK's four capital cities. It will begin the initiative by launching a set of commemorative coins in gold and other materials designed by goldsmith and jeweller to the Queen Stuart Devlin to celebrate London. Further gold coins to honour Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh will be launched over the course of 2010 and 2011. Each piece will feature traditional heraldic shields and will bear the coats of arms for all of the four capital cities to be honoured in the series, while the obverse of the coins will display a portrait of the Queen. The London coin has an image of the coat of arms of the Corporation of the City of London. "As capital cities are so close to the nation's heart, it was really important to create something people identify with," commented Dave Knight, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint. "Stuart Devlin has achieved this brilliantly in his design." Last month, Bloomberg reported figures showing that the Royal Mint more than doubled its production of gold coins in 2009 due to high demand for the precious metal from investors.
