Monday, 8th March 2010 (1138 views) A rare gold coin donated to an Ayrshire charity shop has raised hundreds of pounds for the organisation in question.The Oxfam Bookstore in Troon received the 1887 Queen Victoria £5 coin after it was donated by a member of the public. Julie McCulloch, manager of the store, said that she immediately realised that the gold coin was valuable. The piece was auctioned over the internet and eventually raised £871 for Oxfam. "Every once in a while you get a real gem like this stunning coin and it gives us all a real thrill," Ms McCulloch remarked. David Tennant, a volunteer at the shop who confirmed the value of the gold coin, added: "The coin really had the wow factor." Known as the Jubilee Head, the coin was produced to commemorate Queen Victoria's golden jubilee and features an image of the monarch on the obverse and St George defeating the dragon on the reverse.
