Wednesday, 4th November 2009 (619 views) Gold coin collectors and investors have shown a strong appetite for the 2009 version of the American Buffalo Proof Coins, with the US Mint receiving 19,468 orders for the 24-c pieces in the four days since its launch on October 29th.By comparison, orders for the 2008 version of the one-ounce proof coin topped 19,591 between its launch in July to December, Coin Update News noted. The release of the 2009 American Buffalo had been delayed because of a shortage of gold blanks to strike the coins amid high investor demand for the precious metal. First issued in 1913, the American Buffalo features designs originally produced for the American five cent coin by James Earle Fraser, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The obverse of the coin features a Native American chief based on Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux, Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne and an unnamed third man who sat for Fraser. On the reverse is a depiction of a bison, believed to be based on Black Diamond, an animal that was a famed attraction at the New York Zoological Gardens.
