Investing in gold has become increasingly popular in recent months as people look for a hedge against a possible surge in inflation and a store for their wealth amid uncertain economic conditions.

Speaking to Stylish magazine, economist Kent Ninomiya said gold bullion should be the investment of choice for those looking to put their money into the precious metal for the first time.

One-ounce bullion coins issued by government mints around the world are often the easiest way to buy gold because they are used by every dealer, he said.

The most popular types of gold bullion coins include the US Mint's American Eagle, which was launched in 1986, the Krugerrand from South Africa and the Austrian Mint's Philharmonic.

When purchasing these or other bullion coins, buyers should ensure they come in a protective covering and are free from scratches or fingerprints. Investors should never handle their coins with their bare hands or attempt to clean them, as this can reduce their value, the economist noted.
