A rare 1879 gold coin was the star lot of a recent numismatic auction held by Heritage Auction Galleries in Texas last week.

The Dallas Signature US Coin Auction saw a gold Flowing Hair Stella sell for $161,000 (£98,007), reflecting the current high demand for a piece that was made in a limited quantity.

Other top-selling gold coins included a 1925 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle that went for $149,500 and another Double Eagle, this time from 1927, which sold for $109,250.

Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auction Galleries, said the success of the auction was indicative of the current state of the rare numismatics sector.

"The rare coin market seems to be almost fully recovered in many areas - and perhaps even headed for record price levels next year," he remarked.

Heritage Auction Galleries also sold a number of other rare gold coins for six-figure sums at its Long Beach US Coin, Currency and World Coin sales in California last month.
