Friday, 25th September 2009 (3395 views) A number of rare gold coins were snapped up by bidders at the recent Pre-show Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Philadelphia Expo in Pennsylvania. One of the highlights was an 1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle, which sold for $32,775 (£20,456) at the sale managed by Bowers and Merena Auctions. A 1926 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle also went for $25,300, while an 1891 Liberty Double Eagle attracted a final bid of $24,150. The two-session auction - which mainly focused on rare colonial and early federal-era coinage - brought total sales of more than $2.5 million overall. "Philadelphia was a wonderful choice for this Whitman show ... The city is so rich in American history, which lends itself to the real nature of what we do in numismatics," commented Steve Deeds, president of Bowers and Merena. The company will run an auction featuring gold and other coins from a collection put together by American numismatic expert Dr Alfred Globus in Baltimore, Maryland during November.
