Thursday, 23rd July 2009 (868 views) A quarter-ounce 99.9 per cent gold coin is to be issued by the central bank of China to commemorate the forthcoming Asian Games.The People's Bank of China said today (July 23rd) that 30,000 gold coins will be produced in total, with each having a face value of 100 yuan. Shenzhen Guobao Mint and Shanghai Mint will produce the coins, the Xinhua news agency reported. China launched its first such commemorative coin in 1979 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The Asian Games will take place in Guangzhou in southern China between November 12th and 27th this year. China has previously issued special commemorative gold coins with a face value of 150 yuan for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The coins were available in a mintage of 60,000 and featured the Beijing Games logo and a pair of traditional Chinese dragons on the front. Various pictograms from the event were featured on the reverse.
