The third and final issue of special commemorative gold coins for the 2010 Winter Olympics has been launched by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Up to 50,000 Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins will be produced by the mint's facility in Ottawa.

The coins each consist of one ounce of 99.99 per cent pure gold and have a face value of C$50.

An ice hockey player flanked by two maple leaves is engraved on the reverse of the coins.

Ian Bennett, president and chief executive of the Royal Canadian Mint, said that his organisation was "delighted" with the response from investors and collectors to its previous two Olympic gold coin issues.

"The mint ... is looking forward to a repeat success as its newest Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games bullion coins are launched with only months remaining," he remarked.

Earlier this month, the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled its new Blessings of Wealth 99.999 per cent pure gold coin, the design of which was inspired by Chinese culture.
