A $20 gold coin, described as one of the most important gold pieces produced in San Francisco during the Californian Gold Rush, is to be auctioned next month in Los Angeles.

The "unique" Kellogg and Company specimen dating from 1854 is thought to be one of only 42 coins that escaped being melted down when the Philadelphia Mint handled the withdrawal of the issue.

Steve Deeds, president of auction house Bowers and Merena, said three of the other survivors are currently housed in the Smithsonian Institution and it is very rare that a Kellogg and Company gold $20 piece goes on sale.

The auction will see another rare coin - a "gorgeous" 1907 Rolled Edge Indian Eagle - going on the block.

According to Heritage Auction Galleries, this $10 gold piece was designed for general circulation and only 50 specimens are thought to have avoided being melted down.

Both the Kellogg and Company coin and the 1907 Rolled Edge Indian Eagle will be open to bids between August 5th and 8th at Bowers and Merena's Official Auction of the American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money in Los Angeles.
