Thursday, 16th July 2009 (985 views) Two gold coins dating from 1879 sold for six-figure sums at a recent auction in the US.The Summer FUN auction in Florida, held by Heritage Auction Galleries, saw the Judd-1635 1879 $4 Flowing Hair Gold stellas at grades PR64 Cameo and PR65 Cameo sell for $166,750 (£101,452) and $155,250 respectively. Other top-selling gold coins included an 1859-O Double Eagle, which went for $71,875, and an octagonal 1915-S Panama-Pacific that sold for $69,000. "We're quite pleased with the results. Collectors responded well to the fine American coinage we offered," remarked Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auction Galleries. The 1879 $4 stella Flowing Hair design by Charles Barber is the most popular gold pattern used in coin production and the coins are rarely seen in mint condition. It was designed with the intention of being used in international trade in a similar manner to today's euro and was almost the equivalent to the Austrian eight florin, French twenty franc, Italian twenty lire, Spanish twenty peseta and Dutch eight florin coins when it was first launched.
