The market for buying and selling gold coins in the US is still strong, an expert has said.

According to Harry Miller of Coins Magazine, US gold American Eagles and other popular world gold bullion products are performing particularly well, with few reductions in premiums taking place among sellers.

While buyers are becoming more selective when it comes to higher denomination US gold coins, premiums on these have eased somewhat, he noted.

However, Mr Miller said that the opposite is true for smaller denominations, which are seeing higher premiums and lower levels of selectivity among buyers.

"Scarce date and difficult to find items are still in strong demand and are snapped up by knowledgeable buyers as soon as they appear," he commented.

Earlier this month, the US Mint said it had sold 680,500 one-ounce American Eagle gold bullion coins during the first half of 2009, compared with 180,000 in the same period last year, according to figures obtained by the Wall Street Journal.
