Tuesday, 14th July 2009 (1019 views) The second proof issue from the Perth Mint of Australia's Koala gold coin series has been launched.Featuring a depiction of a young koala sitting on a branch, the coins are legal tender in Australia and have been made from 99.99 per cent pure gold. The reverse side includes Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination. Collectors can buy the coin in 2oz, 1oz, 1/10oz and 1/25oz sizes, with respective mintages of 250, 2,000, 5,000 and 15,000. The 1oz coin is a high-relief version and each piece comes in a luxury presentation case with a lid constructed from jarrah timber. Other gold coins recently launched by the Perth Mint include the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Gold Proof coins and the 2009 Gold Proof Sovereign. The Perth Mint first opened in 1899 and is the official issuer for the Australian federal government's Gold and Silver Bullion Coin Program.
