Tuesday, 14th July 2009 (1185 views) Spain has issued orders for its navy to search for gold treasure believed to have been lost off the southern coast of the country hundreds of years ago.According to the Mirror, the Aztec and Inca gold and other reserves are thought to be worth tens of billions of pounds and are believed to be in ships that were sunk during bad weather on their way back to Cadiz from South America in the 16th century. It says that radar and sonar surveys are to be undertaken by minesweepers in the navy to see if the shipwrecks can be found. A number of historically and financially valuable gold treasure hoards have been discovered by deep-sea explorers in shipwrecks over the years. One British ship, the SS Laurentic, went down during World War I near Ireland with a 35-tonne trove of gold bullion. Most of the ship's gold has been recovered since, although it is believed that over 20 bars of gold remain under the sea.
