Tuesday, 7th July 2009 (986 views) The Royal Canadian Mint has announced the launch of a new gold coin inspired by Chinese culture.Its Blessings of Wealth collector coin is 99.999 per cent pure gold, limited to a mintage of 5,000 and has a face value of C$150 (£80). It retails for C$799.95. Toronto artist Harvey Chan came up with a unique take on the Chinese blessing "may gold and jade fill your house" with a design incorporating a goldfish - for which the Chinese character is linked with wealth and jade - and cloud patterning representing eternity. A peony is featured in the centre of the design to portray the wish of infinite good fortune. The reverse of the coin is engraved with Chinese characters. The Royal Canadian Mint was the first mint to come up with a 99.999 per cent pure gold coin in 1998. It launched another 99.999 per cent pure gold coin featuring the pitcher plant, the official flower of Newfoundland and Labrador, earlier this year.
