The latest coins in the US Mint's First Spouse series have gone on sale.

Letitia Tyler, wife of the country's tenth president John Tyler, is the focus of the 24-c pieces.

Mrs Tyler died while her husband was still in office in September 1842 and was the first presidential spouse to pass away in the White House, having made just one public appearance as first lady.

Her coin features a portrait by sculptor-engraver Phebe Hemphill and the dates '1841-1842' - the period during which she served.

The pieces are the second of five to be released in the range this year and according to the US Mint, a maximum of 40,000 will be produced.

Earlier this week, Coin News noted that the Louisa Adams editions may prove to be the rarest so far.

Sales of them stopped yesterday (July 2nd), with comparatively few having been bought since they were released in June of last year.
