Wednesday, 1st July 2009 (805 views) Several rare gold coins are set to go under the hammer at an upcoming event in the US.Heritage Auction Galleries revealed that it will be offering the pieces in Beverly Hills, California from July 31st to August 2nd. Among them is an 1854-S quarter eagle, of which just 246 were produced. President of Heritage Greg Rohan described it as an "underrated" coin, but noted that collectors have begun to show much greater appreciation for it in recent years. "This coin is truly a legendary rarity and one of just a dozen known survivors from the first quarter eagle issue produced by the San Francisco Mint," he added. Also featuring in the auction will be a near-mint 1856-O double eagle, which is said to be one of the finest examples of its kind. Last month, Numismatic News revealed that a similar piece sold for a record price of more than $1.4 million (£847,000) at a Heritage auction.
