A new set of gold coins featuring one of Malta's most famous buildings has been issued by the country's central bank.

Built on Merchants Street in Valletta in the 18th century as a court, La Castellania currently houses the city's Medical and Public Health Head Office and is depicted on the reverse of the item, the Malta Independent reports.

Its name and 12 stars appear in the border around it, while the Emblem of Malta and the 2009 year of issue are on the obverse.

The coins, which were minted at the Royal Dutch Mint, have been released as part of the cultural heritage celebrations that are the focus of the Europa Programme 2009.

Indicating this, the Europa Star - the programme's official logo - also features on the reverse.

Priced at €200 (£171) each, the gold coins can be purchased from the Central Bank of Malta's distribution centre in Valletta.
