Yamana Gold has had its shares added to the FTSE Gold Mines Index.

Peter Marrone, chairman and chief executive of the Canadian-based gold producer, stated that the company is delighted to be included on the index, which he suggested was recognition of Yamana's position as a "premier global gold producer".

"Yamana considers that becoming a member of this prestigious index will further increase global investor awareness and its visibility among index-tracking funds," he added.

Mining companies that have the capacity to sustain production of more than 300,000 ounces of gold a year and generate most of their revenue from this segment are listed on the FTSE exchange.

In May, Yamana revealed that it had produced 271,482 gold equivalent ounces from its mines during the first quarter of 2009 and $224.3 million (£136.7 million) of revenue.

Record production levels were achieved at its mine in Jacobina, Brazil, which accounted for 27,078 ounces of gold.
