Friday, 19th June 2009 (962 views) Gold coins have been produced to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.Pobjoy Mint announced that it has completed the pieces, which are to be used on the Falkland Islands. The reverse of the coin features a classic portrait of the naturalist with his name written above it, while the obverse bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Darwin was born in Shropshire, England in February 1809 and is best known for his theory of evolution and book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. He visited the Falkland Islands around 1834 and a settlement there is named after him. Stefanus Schoeman, South African ambassador to Korea, recently suggested that commemorative gold coins represent a good opportunity for investment. He was commenting after coins to mark next year's World Cup finals - to be held in South Africa - were introduced in the Asian country.
