Thursday, 18th June 2009 (1041 views) A commemorative gold coin has been created to mark the centenary of the Pro Patria Foundation. The Swiss Confederation has commissioned the piece, which was designed by Hans Erni - an artist who is also celebrating his 100th birthday this year. According to the Swiss Mint, the Pro Patria Foundation was set up by a group of people who wanted to mark Switzerland's national day by organising widespread charitable giving and therefore encouraging solidarity. Its work now focuses on the preservation and upkeep of historic buildings. CoinNews noted that Mr Erni designed the coin to symbolise trust in a peaceful future, with a couple who are "facing the future with confidence" depicted. Gold coins designed to commemorate next year's football World Cup finals, which will be held in South Africa, recently went on sale in Korea. Stefanus Schoeman, South African ambassador to the country, suggested that they represent a good opportunity for investment.
