Tuesday, 16th June 2009 (894 views) Gold pieces that are thought to be around 2,000 years old are going on display in New York next month.Reuters reports that a collection of more than 21,000 gold items was discovered in Afghanistan in 1978, but was hidden until 2003. The pieces were thought to have been stolen or taken to Moscow following the Soviet invasion, but they were in fact kept secret by employees of the National Museum of Kabul. Afghan ambassador to the US Said Jawad told the news source that the museum is not yet ready to display the gold and that proceeds from the travelling exhibition will help pay for renovations until they can return. Entitled 'Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul', the exhibit is set to run from June 23rd until September 20th. Later this month, Japan will host the Egypt's Sunken Treasures exhibit, which also includes a number of gold items.
