Gold coins produced to commemorate next year's football World Cup finals in South Africa have gone on sale in Korea.

The development was welcomed by South African ambassador to the country Stefanus Schoeman, who noted that the pieces represent a good investment opportunity.

He also observed that the launch is well-timed, as the event begins exactly one year from today (June 11th).

The gold coins will be distributed in Korea by Hwadong, which has done the same for a number of similar commemorative pieces in the past.

According to JoongAng Daily, five gold coins have been produced, each bearing the image of a wild animal native to Africa, as well as the tournament emblem.

Earlier this week, a new gold coin was produced to commemorate the Shanghai World Expo, which takes place in China next year.

The People's Bank of China created the pieces, with more than 100 outlets set to offer them for sale.
