A gold medal that is nearly 100 years old is set to go to auction in the UK.

Bonhams will be offering the piece, which is expected to fetch around £1,000, in Chester next week, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

The medal belonged to Alfred Robinson, who was a goalkeeper for Blackburn Rovers Football Club when the side won its first league title in the 1911-12 season.

Robinson went on to win another championship with the club two years later, before the first world war interrupted his career.

The news source noted that he struggled with injury and competition for his place upon his return and eventually left Blackburn in 1923.

Meanwhile, Camel Auctioneers is offering a gold medal from the 1947-48 Charity Shield this week.

Presented to Arsenal player Archie MacCauley, it has an estimated worth of £2,500 to £3,500 and will go under the hammer in Midgham, near Reading.
