Tuesday, 9th June 2009 (1015 views) New gold coins are being produced in the UK, marking 500 years since the accession of Henry VIII.The Royal Mint is issuing the £5 pieces, with 1,509 of them being created in order to recognise the year he came to the throne (1509). Each one will cost collectors £1,195 and bear the figure of Henry VIII as well as the words Rosa Sine Spina, meaning "rose without a thorn". Commenting on the issue, Royal Mint director of commemorative coins Dave Knight said the monarch had been one of the "most influential" in history. "His reign changed the face of England forever and we felt it was essential that this remarkable period of history was commemorated with a lasting and treasured memento," Mr Knight added. The Royal Mint recently launched a special £5 gold coin to begin its countdown to the Olympic Games in London, with two more planned before the event takes place in 2012.
