Monday, 8th June 2009 (1071 views) A New Orleans double eagle gold coin has been sold for a record amount at auction.Heritage Auction Galleries recently held the event in conjunction with the Long Beach Coin, Stamp and Collectibles Expo in California, Numismatic News reports. The 1856-O piece fetched more than $1.4 million (£879,000), having previously being sold by the company for $310,000 in 2002 and for $542,800 two years later. Explaining the significance of the sale, president of Heritage Auction Galleries Greg Rohan was quoted as saying: "Only 19 coins have ever sold at auction for more than this one and none of those were struck in New Orleans." Also up for auction at the event was an 1866-S No Motto Liberty Head gold double eagle piece, which fetched $103,500. The next Long Beach Coin, Stamp and Collectibles Expo is to be held at the California Convention Centre from September 10th to 12th of this year.
