Thursday, 4th June 2009 (972 views) A new gold coin has been produced to mark the 250th anniversary of London's Kew Gardens.Designer Christopher Le Brun told Numis Master that he was inspired by the iconic pagoda at the venue. The coin is made from 22-c gold, weighs 15 grams and will be restricted to 1,000 pieces by the Royal Mint. A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse, while the reverse features the pagoda surrounded by intertwining plants. "Like the London red bus, the Kew Gardens pagoda is an instantly recognisable and much-loved symbol, which greatly influenced my decision to embrace it in my design," Mr Le Brun was quoted as saying. The Bank of Jamaica recently issued a set of commemorative gold coins, presenting them to athletes who won gold medals at last summer's Beijing Olympics. Usain Bolt, a triple champion on the track at the Games, was among those who were honoured.
