Business leaders from Canada have discussed the possibility of investing in Thailand's gold mining sector during a recent visit to the country.

The Thai industry minister Chanchai Chairungruang said that he talked about the potential for gold resource exploration and mining in the Pichit, Loei, Petchabul and Prachinburi provinces with Canadian senator Mac Harb, an advisor to Southeast Asia Mining, MCOT reports.

Speaking after a meeting with business leaders, Mr Chairungruang said that delegates had "expressed strong interest" in investing in the sector.

According to the Thai news source, "Canadian mining investment interests now want Thailand as their mining base in south-east Asia".

Akara Mining, an Australian-Thai joint venture, recently unveiled plans to boost investment in a gold-processing plant in the Phetchabun province in late 2009.

The company said that the additional spending would raise production capacity at the facility from 2.4 million tonnes a year to five million tonnes.
