Wednesday, 20th May 2009 (1300 views) Divers from Marine Exploration are seeking gold treasure in the waters of the Dominican Republic.Explorer Burt Webber and his crew are searching sunken wrecks for valuable cargoes off the Silver Bank of the Caribbean country. Divers are using "unique jet-propulsion boots" and handheld cesium magnetometers to explore "numerous treasure galleon shipwrecks" and are based from the 128ft vessel Hispaniola, which has been redesigned as a state-of-the-art control centre. Mr Webber discovered the Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion treasure ship in 1978, finding millions of dollars worth of gold chains and bullion on board. The Spanish galleon sank in 1641 off the Dominican Republic and the explorer was the first person in more than three centuries to see its hoard. Divers have also been searching for sunken gold treasure on shipwrecks in the Puget Sound off the coast of Washington state in the US, according to Komo News.
