Tuesday, 19th May 2009 (1386 views) An 1856-O Liberty Head $20 (£13) gold coin is part of an auction that will take place during the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo in California later this month. The coin is an example of the rarest New Orleans Double Eagle $20 piece - just 2,250 of which were originally minted - and is described in the catalogue as having a "lemon-yellow colour and rose patina, with only a faint trace of high point wear", Numismatic News reports. According to Heritage Auction Galleries, which is conducting the sale on May 29th, the gold coin is the finest example of its kind known by a "wide margin". The Long Beach sale also features an 1871 Carson City Mint $20 gold coin and a number of other gold Double Eagles, including a 1907 Saint-Gaudens. A total of three Signature US Coin Auction sessions will be held at the California event on May 28th, 29th and 31st. The exhibition at the California Convention Centre is expected to attract over 1,000 dealers, including gold coin and jewellery traders.
