Monday, 18th May 2009 (1111 views) A pair of gold bars, each weighing one kilogram, will go under the hammer on May 22nd in Philadelphia.The items, one with Swiss markings and the other hailing from Russia, are part of Pook & Pook's Variety Auction this month. Expected to generate bids of $28,000 to $30,000 (£18,370 to £19,690) each, the 24-c gold bars came from the estate of Myrtle Quier of Reading, auctioneer Ron Pook told the Philadelphia Inquirer. Gold jewellery items in the sale include earrings, a brooch depicting a mother and three baby birds in a nest, an 18-c gold whale-form brooch estimated to be worth $250 to $400 and an 18-c gold open face pocket watch. Also included in the auction is a 1978 one-ounce South African gold coin with an estimated value of $500 to $1,000. In related news, 47 gold sovereigns found in a hedgerow in North Yorkshire more than 30 years ago recently sold for £6,400 at a sale held by Tennants Auctioneers.
