Friday, 15th May 2009 (1150 views) A new exhibition being created at the Anchorage Museum in Alaska will focus on gold, which has played a key role in the state's development.Currently undergoing expansion, the museum will reopen at the end of this month and the gold display is being installed on the third floor of the building, KTUU reported. According to the news source, the gold exhibit, which runs until August 2nd 2009, is "under strict security". Created by the American Museum of Natural History, the exhibition, entitled Gold, will feature 300 cultural objects and geological specimens that showcase the precious metal. Highlights include a 300 sq ft room covered in three ounces of 23-c gold leaf that will enable visitors to "literally surround themselves with gold", a Faberge Easter egg, the first gold coins minted in ancient Lydia and Ionia, pre-Columbian gold jewellery and a Tiffany brooch designed by Paloma Picasso. The display will lead people through the history of the precious metal and explain how ore is located, mined, processed and crafted. Gold was first discovered in Alaska in 1849 on the Kenai Peninsula by a Russian mining engineer.
