Rare gold US civil war gold coin on displayThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 14th May 2009 (1151 views) A gold coin dating from the American civil war and thought to be one of only 50 or 60 remaining examples is on show in Atlanta, Georgia. The rare 90 per cent pure gold Dahlonega dollar was struck in the north of the state in 1861 in a die created by the US government and is worth an estimated $125,000 (£82,600), according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Just a few thousand of the tiny gold dollars were made with the words 'the United States of America' on the obverse. However, the Confederate States of America broke away from the Union and the coins became currency in a different jurisdiction after the mint was seized by the governor of Georgia. An example of a Dahlonega dollar is currently part of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Atlanta Expo at the Cobb Galleria Centre, having been lent to the event by a private collector from Alabama. Running from May 14th to 16th 2009 in Atlanta, the event features the 22-ounce Brooke's Range gold nugget, demonstrations on how to pan for the precious metal and the Eldorado Sale of gold coins.
