Tuesday, 12th May 2009 (1103 views) A new gold coin commemorating 250 years of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew has been unveiled.Designed by artist Christopher Le Brun, it depicts the iconic Kew Chinese pagoda with plants twining around it, along with the anniversary dates. The collectors' 50p piece from the Royal Mint is intended to mark the important contribution the gardens have made to the fields of science, horticulture and garden design over the past 250 years. Director of commemorative coins at the mint Dave Knight said: "What better way to celebrate than with Le Brun's marvellous design which captures the gardens' glorious history and beauty in one memorable image." Just 1,000 of the limited edition gold coins will be produced at a price of £550 each and circulating versions featuring the same design will be launched later this year. Attracting over one million visitors annually, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew comprises 132 hectares of landscaped gardens and was designated a Unesco world heritage site in 2003.
