A unique Easter egg containing a gold coin has gone on sale at Selfridges this year.

The £1,000 chocolate egg features a gold bullion Britannia coin and is being marketed as an investment purchase for chocolate lovers.

Set into the shell of the Easter egg, the coin weighs one troy ounce and is a rare issue no longer produced by the Royal Mint.

According to Selfridges, the coin is worth an estimated £900 because of its rarity value and the chocolate egg is crafted by Melt's head chocolatier Chika Watanabe.

Ewan Venters, the store's director of food and restaurants, commented: "Don't invest in the stock market this Easter, invest in the golden egg instead, it really is worth its weight in gold."

Production of gold coins around the world is being increased in a bid to cope with soaring demand from investors for the precious metal during the current economic slowdown, Reuters has reported.
