Thursday, 19th March 2009 (1576 views) A 22-c gold medal owned by Viscount Allenby goes on sale this week at Spink auction house in London.The rare item is expected to generate bids of up to £7,000 when it is auctioned this week, according to the Nottingham Evening Post. Field Marshal Edmund Allenby, 1st Viscount of Megiddo, was a friend of Lawrence of Arabia and was one of only 64 people to have been presented with the gold Livingstone Medal, having commanded the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in World War I. Introduced by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in memory of explorer Dr David Livingstone in 1901, other recipients of the Livingstone Medal include Sir David Attenborough, Scott of the Antarctic and Neil Armstrong. The sale of the John Marshall Collection, other ancient, British, world coins, commemorative medals and books taking place at Spink on March 19th also includes many gold coins. In other news, mints from around the world have been showing new gold coins at the annual World Money Fair in Berlin this month, Numismaster.com reported.
