Monday, 16th March 2009 (1940 views) A rare 17th century gold and black lacquer chest has been placed on display at the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles as part of a new exhibition. The Japanese chest is on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and has been described as the "most important" Japanese object in the UK collection, the Los Angeles Times reported. Dating from around 1640, the Mazarin Chest has been restored using a grant from the Getty Foundation and appears in the current Tales in Sprinkled Gold: Japanese Lacquer for European Collectors exhibit at the LA gallery. Made in Kyoto, the chest demonstrates skilled Japanese craftsmanship and was created to suit European tastes, with imagery from Japanese literature and ornate patterns. Julia Hutt, a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, commented: "Artistically it is really on a par with objects made for the domestic market by the best workshops in Japan. The detail is just amazing." In other news, jewellery artwork created by 12 UK-based artists will be placed on display at London's Goldsmiths' Hall from May 29th until July 11th.
