Friday, 6th March 2009 (1699 views) Sotheby's has announced that a number of gold items will be in its Islamic World auction, which takes place later this month in Doha, Qatar.The sale on March 19th is the first ever Arts of the Islamic World event held by the auction house in the Middle East and spans almost 1,000 years, covering cultures from north Africa, the Middle East and Iran. Highlights of the auction include a Qur'an leaf decorated richly in gold and dating from the ninth or tenth century AD, a gold and silver inlaid bowl from the Mamluk period estimated at $400,000-500,000 (£281,000-£351,500) and an 18th century curtain from north Africa embroidered in gold-wrapped thread. Edward Gibbs, head of Sothebys Middle East Department, commented: "Sotheby's has worked closely with collectors and museums from the region for many years so we are delighted to be able to offer so many superb objects in our inaugural sale in Doha." Meanwhile, a number of gold pieces have been included in the prestigious South Florida Destination Fashion 2009 silent auction by Bal Harbour Shops, including items from Piaget, De Beers and Cartier.
