Friday, 6th March 2009 (1953 views) Two bills are being put before the US Senate and the House of Representatives in the US calling for the country's mint to produce a gold coin honouring Mark Twain. The proposed $5 (£3.51) gold piece would be released in 2013 and would commemorate the work of the author who created the characters of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, Numismaster reported. Books by Mark Twain, or Samuel Langhorne Clemens, are read by schoolchildren across the US each year and the bill before the Senate has the backing of Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate banking committee. The bills call for up to 300,000 gold coins to be produced, with the proceeds benefiting properties and projects that are linked to Mark Twain.
