Monday, 2nd March 2009 (1591 views) A number of golden items are on display in a new exhibition at the British Museum in London.Covering the work of artists and craftsmen under the patronage of Shah 'Abbas I in the 17th century, the show documents the contribution of the shah to Persian culture. Gold-ground silks, metal work and gifts for shrines in Mashhad, Ardabil and Qum are on display, many for the first time outside Iran. Shah 'Abbas ruled from 1587-1629AD and built strong relations with Europe, commissioning works of art and architecture. Entitled Shah 'Abbas: The Remaking of Iran, the exhibition is in association with the Iran Heritage Foundation and runs until June 14th 2009 at the British Museum's Reading Room. It runs in conjunction with a coins and medals display, The splendour of Isfahan: coins from Iran, which showcases the history of the city through its coinage. Meanwhile, gold treasures from the Afghan National Museum in Kabul are on show at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, including intricate ornaments.
