Wednesday, 4th February 2009 (1437 views) More than 40,000 people visited the Museum of Gold in Taipei during the six days from January 27th 2009, new figures have shown.The Taiwanese museum attracted a record number of visitors (10,258) on January 29th, as people flocked to touch its 220kg brick of pure gold for luck, according to the China Post. Touching gold is believed invoke good fortune at the start of the Chinese New Year and a total of 42,349 visitors attended the Museum of Gold in six days last month, generating ticket sales in excess of NT$800,000 (£16,500). The Museum of Gold in Ruifang Township's Jinguashi is home to the NT$200 million brick of gold and is situated in the Gold Ecological Park, the former office of Taiwan Metal Mining. Featuring exhibits relating to gold mining, including maps to mining tunnels, demonstrations about gold and information about mining culture in the past, the museum houses a number of gold artworks. Meanwhile, China Post has reported that mining experts have estimated the reserve of gold in the Jinguashi district is worth more than NT$200 billion.
