Monday, 19th January 2009 (1365 views) A significant hoard of Iron Age gold coins has been discovered in a field in Suffolk. The haul, worth an estimated equivalent of £500,000 to £1 million today, comprises 824 staters and was unearthed near Wickham Market by a metal detector enthusiast. Found in a pottery jar, the coins date from 40BC to AD15 and are thought to be the biggest hoard of gold coins from the Iron Age ever found in modern Britain. Jude Plouviez fromSuffolk County Council Archaeological Service stated: "It's a good, exciting find. It gives us a lot of new information about the late Iron Age and particularly East Anglia in the late Iron Age." Ms Plouviez added that the collection of coins indicates that a "significant settlement" existed nearby and the haul will now be valued ahead of an inquest to determine whether it is treasure trove. Archaeologists working in Jerusalem recently found a hoard of Byzantine gold coins hidden in a niche in a wall.
