A 'lucky' gold coin given to John Higgins by his wife Denise has been credited with helping him through to the quarter-finals of the snooker Masters.

Higgins carried the coin in his pocket for luck during his match against Marco Fu of Hong Kong at the Wembley Arena, winning the game 6-4.

"Over my career I have tried not to think or talk about luck too much, but I have to admit that was a really big slice," he told the Times.

The win is the first at the Masters for Higgins since his victory against Ronnie Sullivan in the 2006 final and he has credited the coin with the result.

Meanwhile, a mall in Bangalore, India has been giving one lucky customer a gold coin each day to encourage purchases.

The Garuda Mall selected one winner from people who filled in a form after buying something from its stores.
