Pieces of ancient gold decoration are forming part of a new exhibition at the University of Arizona Museum of Art which explores the culture of the ancient Americas.

Items on loan to the museum from private collectors Michael and Beth Kasser include gold items, such as implements and jewellery fashioned from the metal.

Joanne Stuhr, curator of the exhibit, told the Daily Wildcat: "These are things that were created not as works of art, but as tools in a way. The cultures created them to be used in a ritual or a utilitarian setting."

The Ritual Beauty: Art of the Ancient Americas show is intended to provide visitors with a greater understanding of the pre-Columbian world and its artistic achievements.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Asian Art Museum is displaying a number of gold objects as part of its Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul exhibition, which runs until January 25th.
