A total of 148 post offices in India are now selling gold coins as part of a pilot project.

According to a statement from the Indian government's Press Information Bureau, 33 post offices in Maharashtra, 29 in Gujarat province and 20 in each of Tamilnadu and Delhi are currently selling coins.

The pilot project to sell gold coins from post offices in India has been operating since October 15th this year.

Customers can purchase 24-c 0.5 gram, one gram, five gram and eight gram gold coins with certification from Vallcambi, Switzerland.

Post offices are selling the coins on a commission basis and are supplied to outlets by an approved vendor, with prices fixed based on the prevailing international rate of gold.

A collection including 34 Indian gold coins was sold by specialist auctioneers Morton & Eden in London earlier this month for £15,750.
