Wednesday, 17th December 2008 (1460 views) Ancient gold items dating back 4,000 years have been placed on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as part of a new exhibition.The show, Beyond Babylon: Art, Trade, and Diplomacy in the Second Millennium BC, explores the interaction that occurred between ancient civilisations in the Near East. Objects from temples, royal palaces, tombs and a shipwreck are being exhibited, demonstrating the best in artistry and craftsmanship from 4,000 years ago. Philippe de Montebello, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, stated: "Extensive communication and trade in antiquity among many ancient cultures led to the development of new art forms of astonishing creativity and technical achievement." The exhibition runs until March 15th 2009 and highlights include gold jewellery from tombs at Ebla, a gold circlet decorated with gazelle and stag heads and gold bowls from Ugarit near the Syrian coast. Gold fragments from an Anglo Saxon sword have been placed on display at The Collection in Lincolnshire after they were discovered in a field in Market Rasen.
