Tuesday, 16th December 2008 (1420 views) An exhibition of historic coins has taken place in India, with a number of gold items among those on show.Organised by coin collecting group Shivarai, the event was held over three days at the Brahman Shikshan Mandal's English Medium School in Thane, the Times of India reports. The coins on display spanned a period of more than 3,000 years, with the publication noting that they have been used by historians to track changes in society. Shrikrushna Parnaik, a member of Shivarai, said that gold coins have acted as proof of the existence of various regimes, adding: "Coin collection is a hobby that attracts persons from eight to 80 years. Collectors are a great help in preserving the heritage." Archaeology magazine has listed the discovery of more than 50lbs of gold coins on a 16th-century Portuguese shipwreck off the coast of Namibia among its top ten finds of 2008.
