An auction of valuable coins in the US has seen several gold items attract significant bids.

Numismatic News reports that the four-day event, held in Houston, Texas from December 4th, was part of the Money Show of the Southwest.

A total of $11 million (£7.2 million) was brought in by bids, although that figure is expected to rise as a result of purchases after the auction.

The publication notes that the highlight of the gold coins on offer was a $5 Small Eagle reverse dating from 1795.

It was the highest-certified coin of its variety and sold for $172,500.

The event was organised by Heritage Auction Galleries, which was established in 1976 and is now the third largest auction house in the world.
