A gold coin from Australia is currently third in a list of the world's favourite coin.

According to Numismaster.com, a AUD$25 gold coin entitled Kangaroo at Sunset is the third most popular coin in the People's Choice Coin of the Year list.

The contest represents coins from 15 countries around the world and the annual awards are sponsored by World Coin News and NumisMaster.

Polls are open until January 4th 2009 and the competition is designed to honour the world's mints with museum curators, experts, medallists, mint officials, journalists and members of the public voting for the winners.

Other nominated gold coins in the contest include the Canadian Maple Leaf with a face value of one million dollars and weighing a record 100kg.

The Coin of the Year awards ceremony will be held on February 7th 2009 at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany.
