A collection of Civil War gold coins has been sold at an auction in Dorset for almost £36,000.

The hoard of gold pieces dated from the 17th century and raised a total of £35,933.

Built up by a local collector, the coin collection included a rare Unite 1643 Declaration issue gold coin which sold for £6,453.

Amy Brenan, a valuer at Duke's auction house in Dorchester, commented: "It is not often that such a super collection comes up for sale. Antique coins appear to be an up and coming and successful means of investment."

The collection also included so-called 'siege pieces', coins minted around Britain after Charles I fled London during the Civil War.

An array of Indian coins, including 43 gold pieces, owned by a Swiss businessman who worked in India and dating from the fifth century BC to the 20th century were sold by auctioneers Morton & Eden in London earlier this month, according to News-Antique.com.
