Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed a number of gold artefacts as part of an important grave excavation near the citadel of Machu Picchu.

The Incan grave held a number of gold brooches along with other ceremonial objects and a mummy.

According to lead archaeologist Homar Gallegos, the grave was unearthed at a site called Torontoy, a former trade post that is now located in the Machu Picchu state park 20km from the citadel.

Experts at a laboratory in the city of Cuzco are now examining the objects found in the grave, the Associated Press reports.

The Inca Empire was at its height in the 15th and 16th century and covered a large area of western South America.

Chinese archaeologists recently unearthed a 1,000-year-old gold-lined miniature pagoda through to contain part of Buddha's skull at the site of a former temple in Nanjing.
